8/2/14: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY REVIEW! (Spoiler Free)

Yesterday, I went to see Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy with my friend Alexey on opening day.

Without further ado, here's my review:

Brief Plot Overview: Earth-originated pilot Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) goes to rescue a special orb after setting up an exchange to sell it to a friend for a lot of units (cash). But when he returns to his friend, he turns him down after he mentions Ronan, an evil mastermind who plans to use the orb to destroy the galaxy and has already slaughtered many. Quill walks away and encounters a green-skinned alien woman, Gamora (Zoe Saldana), who betrayed Ronan and needs the orb to sustain peace. Rocket, a genetically-modified raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot, a humanoid plant, (voiced by Vin Diesel) want the orb for money. All of them end up fighting for the orb in the city streets, resulting in all of them landing in prison.
In prison, they meet Drax(Dave Bautista), an incredibly-built man, who first wants to kill Gamora for her previous past with Ronan, who killed his family. But after Rocket's plans result in their escape, they eventually become friends, who all want to stop Ronan, and agree to give the orb back to its rightful place.

What I Liked About It: I absolutely loved the movie, from the hilarious comedy throughout, the vivid and memorable characters (my favorite being Rocket), the awesome action sequences, and the soundtrack packed with classic oldies tunes (played throughout thanks to Quill's mix tape player, who he got from his mom before she died). The special effects were amazing, and it certainly was a overwhelming but breathtaking light show. The cast was perfect, and I couldn't have imagined anyone better. Bradley Cooper did a spot-on job voicing Rocket, which made the talking raccoon seem real. The entire movie, although constructed almost entirely of computer animation, still looked fantastic and we soar with the Guardian's adventure to stop Ronan and save the orb almost---I apologize for my geek-out---beautifully.

What I Disliked About It: Unfortunately, this is a Marvel movie, so it comes with a predictable and pretty unoriginal plot (a bunch of heroes different each other go and stop the bad guy and save the world, galaxy, etc.) and sprinkled with the same superhero movie cliches (bad guy wants to do something in terms of destroying something, bad guys looks bad, good guys resolve their differences and work together, the bad guy takes at least two times for them to be defeated, etc.), but they were all minor things compared to the awesomeness the rest of the movie provides.

Rating:

9.5 out of 10
